Is the opening to this novel good (VERY SHORT)? Would you read on? How could I improve?

If it's for an English writing assignment, I think its great. It is a bit short but at the same time I think it's got enough depth to draw the reader in. Personally I'd read on. I don't know whether you'd go back in time and show events leading up to this or whether you would continue at present day i.e. Meanwhile in blah, blah was drinking coffee ect. But I think it's good.
